Implant Restorations

What to Ask Your Dentist About Implant Restorations

Implant restorations are actually quite rare, but dentists and oral surgeons still perform them when necessary. A lot of people aren’t too familiar with dental implant restorations because they are so rarely discussed. However, we are here to help!

In this article, we discuss implant restorations in depth. If you want to know what you should ask your dentist or oral surgeon about implant restorations, then read on to find out more. We highlight some great questions to discuss with your dentist. Ultimately, they can evaluate you and your implants then give you the appropriate response.

What to ask a dentist about implant restorations

First and foremost, it is necessary to understand what an implant restoration is. When a person receives dental implants, it is very unlikely that there will be problems; however, there still are from time to time. An oral surgeon or dentist will perform an implant restoration if the dental implant is painful, swollen, infected or causing problems.

1. What is involved in an implant restoration?

Depending on the problem at hand, the oral surgeon or dentist will likely remove the dental implant. The area will need to be cleaned out and properly sterilized to kill any infections. Then, again, depending on the situation, a bone graft may be necessary to rebuild the bone structure. Later on, the restoration process may involve the replacement of a dental implant.

2. Will an implant restoration hurt?

Anything involving dental implants or restoration may cause some discomfort but that doesn’t necessarily mean excruciating, unbearable pain. During an implant restoration, the oral surgeon or dentist will have to go in and remove the implant, which may not be comfortable. After that, the area will need to be cleaned out and the dentist will place a bone graft. This can also cause some irritation or discomfort.

3. When are implant restorations necessary?

Typically, an implant restoration is needed when a person experiences problems with their implant, artificial tooth or jawbone. After initial placement of a dental implant, discomfort and swelling are to be expected. But, if it’s weeks or months later and there are problems with the implant then an implant restoration may be necessary. Ultimately, it is best to see an oral surgeon or dentist in order to resolve this.

4. Why do implant problems occur?

Dental implants were created to be permanent but just like with any other dental appliance, there can always be problems. Implant sites can get infected, which can cause problems later on. When oral hygiene is neglected, implant sites are more likely going to have problems that will result in a need for an implant restoration.
