General Dentist

What is the Definition of “General Dentist?”

Many have heard of the term general dentistry, but there are some who do not understand what it is or how it differentiates from other types of dentists. Choosing the right type of dentist for routine needs is important, and understanding the type of treatment a general dentist offers can help individuals decide if visiting one is the right choice.

An overview of general dentistry

General dentistry is often used broadly to refer to dentists who offer a range of dental services. Although each general dentist offers their own set of services and unique processes for treating patients, there are certain things that are common among most general dentistry practices.

General dentist defined

A general dentist can be defined as a dental professional that seeks to improve the oral health of patients, work towards the prevention of future oral health concerns and helps patients with the appearance of their smile. It is most often a person’s primary care dental provider. This means the general dentist is who individuals would go to for a routine checkup and cleaning. One of their main goals is prevention, but general dentists can also treat a range of concerns that develop, as well as, types of dental trauma.

General dentistry services

General dentists offer preventive and restorative treatment. They can treat a range of common oral health and dental trauma concerns, including:

  • Broken teeth
  • Dental cavities
  • Oral infections
  • Gum disease
  • Cosmetic issues

In addition to treating existing concerns, general dentists also want to help patients prevent issues from arising in the first place. There are several ways they can assist with prevention, including by offering routine checkups, dental cleanings, fluoride treatment and educating patients on ways to practice good oral hygiene.

How a general dentist is different

A general dentist is similar to a family dentist in a lot of regards. In fact, there are many instances where the two terms can be used interchangeably as they both work towards prevention and can treat patients of all ages. A general dentist is different than a cosmetic dentist as they are more concerned with the oral health of the patient, although they can seek to help patients with cosmetic treatment as well.

What to expect during a general dentistry visit

General dentists are friendly and visits are usually convenient and comfortable. During a routine visit, the general dentist may conduct an oral health examination, order dental X-rays and discuss any symptoms the patient may be experiencing. From there, they can discuss ways to improve or maintain the oral health of the patient through preventive or restorative treatments.
