Teeth Straightening From a General Dentist

Orthodontics Philadelphia, PA

When it is time to undergo teeth straightening, you need to pay a visit to the general dentist’s office. The dentist will review the nature of your bite dysfunction and recommend the best option to restore your teeth’s alignment and give you your desired smile. This article provides information regarding the teeth straightening process.

Options for teeth straightening

Poor oral health care, genetic issues and a small jaw or mouth are all factors that contribute to crooked teeth. Some people may develop teeth misalignment for sucking their thumb or using a pacifier beyond 3 years of age. Any of these factors could result in bite malocclusions, such as underbite, overbite, crossbite or crooked teeth. Some of these issues may be noticeable from childhood, while others may worsen later in life. For teeth straightening, the general dentist will probably recommend any of the following options.

Traditional Braces

Traditional metal braces are popular options for correcting orthodontic issues. The device consists of metal brackets, wires and elastic bands to shift the teeth to their proper position. The brackets sit over the front side of each tooth and are held together with the wires. Metal braces are highly effective for the most severe cases of malocclusion. It takes between one to two years for metal braces to straighten the teeth completely; the time frame depends on the severity of the condition. Some patients may need extensive straightening treatment in cases like major jaw misalignment or an overly crowded mouth.

Clear aligners

Clear aligners consist of custom-made dental trays that fit over the patient’s teeth. The aligners provided in pairs need to be worn at least 22 hours daily for about two weeks before switching to the next trays in the series. As patients move through each pair of the aligners, their teeth move gradually into place.

Dental professionals use a mapping technology that estimates how the teeth will move toward their proper position. The advantage of clear aligners is that they are removable and transparent, a good option for those concerned about their appearance during the treatment. It takes about a year to complete teeth straightening with aligners.

Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces and metal braces use the same mechanism. The only difference is that instead of metal or stainless steel, porcelain or ceramic material is used instead. The bracket is therefore customizable to match the color of the patient’s teeth. It offers a level of discretion with the same function as regular braces.

Lingual braces

Also called invisible braces, they are attached to the back of the teeth and not visible to others. They are often recommended for patients who do not want people to notice the presence of braces. Lingual braces are customized and tend to cost more than traditional braces.

In conclusion

The general dentist will be responsible for coordinating teeth straightening treatment, which could include developing a plan: diagnosis, examination and providing the straightening device. Book an appointment with the dentist to learn about the options available to you.
