Missing Teeth

Options for Replacing a Missing Tooth

There are many reasons people might experience the loss of a tooth, from a sports injury or fall to neglectful brushing and flossing habits. However, a missing tooth does not have to permanently damage a smile. Dental technology has progressed to the point where there are a variety of treatments to replace missing teeth with those that look and act natural. Individuals who opt for tooth replacement may want to review each treatment option with a dentist in order to make the most informed decision possible.

Choosing a treatment

Before patients choose a missing tooth treatment, visiting a dentist for an initial consultation will likely be necessary. This preliminary visit carries a variety of advantages for dental patients and those who treat them, including

  • Learning an individual’s dental history
  • Uncovering oral problems
  • Discovering treatment options and costs

Dentists may also perform cleanings and X-rays before discussing treatment options with patients, as this can provide a complete picture regarding which choices might be best for replacing lost teeth, especially for those who want to repair multiple gaps in their smile.

Dental implants

Implants can be beneficial for those who have a lost tooth that is noticeable during speaking and smiling. A titanium screw is placed in the jawbone, which then heals around the implant rod. Once the screw is secure, a porcelain tooth is set on top of the screw and mounted permanently, filling in the gap. This option may require several visits and provides a long-term solution for missing teeth. Patients are usually required to be in good health for dental implants, as the healing process can take several weeks before the permanent tooth is mounted.

Dental bridges

Individuals who have several missing teeth in one area of the mouth may be candidates for dental bridges, which can close larger gaps that might require more than one dental implant otherwise. This device is named for its ability to bridge spaces left by missing teeth. It is usually affixed to adjacent healthy teeth and fixed in place with permanent dental adhesive, such as cement. This type of smile repair can last for years and usually requires little maintenance beyond regular daily oral care.

Partial denture

Dental patients who are missing multiple upper or lower front teeth can benefit from a partial removable denture, which can fill in unsightly gaps and assist with improved chewing and speaking. This type of denture is bonded to the gums with temporary adhesive and can be removed for cleaning. A partial denture could be an effective option for those who do not have the jawbone strength for permanent implants.

Full denture

A full denture is designed to replace many missing teeth, whether they have been lost due to age or decay. Like partial dentures, these are designed to be removed or adjusted at the wearer’s discretion.

Conclusion

A missing tooth can cause pain and embarrassment, especially when it comes to speaking or smiling. However, with today’s dental technology, there are many different options to repair a smile and restore your confidence for years to come.
