Options For Replacing Missing Teeth

How Replacing a Missing Tooth Can Improve Your Smile

When even a single tooth is missing from the bite, it is difficult for your teeth to perform their daily duties properly. The teeth are used almost constantly every day. We use them to eat, speak and smile. If you are missing a tooth, these daily tasks become more like arduous chores. Replacing that missing tooth will not only complete your smile cosmetically boosting your overall confidence, but it will also help to restore the functionality of your bite.

Missing teeth and your smile

Many might think that one missing tooth is no big deal. However, the mouth begins to go through some negative changes once a tooth is knocked out of place or falls out. As soon as a tooth no longer fills its natural place in the mouth, the surrounding teeth begin to migrate into that space. This can happen in as little as one week after losing a tooth.

This movement of the surrounding and opposing teeth starts a chain reaction of unfortunate changes. The opposing tooth to the missing tooth will begin to drop out of its place, and eventually become loose. At this point, the bite is no longer viable. This tooth may need to be extracted or may fall out on its own after a period of time.

A missing tooth in the front of the mouth is undoubtedly a disruption in the smile. But even the teeth in the back of the mouth, such as the molars can take a toll on any smile. Some patients with wide smiles may display some of their back molars when smiling or speaking. Beyond showing these back teeth while smiling, a missing back tooth can cause the front teeth to shift and twist in order to fill that space in the back.

Replacing your missing tooth

It is in the best interest of every patient and dentist to replace a tooth as soon as it is lost. The longer a patient waits to replace a missing tooth, the more problems arise and the more expensive any smile-saving procedures become. Once a tooth is replaced, the smile goes back to its former glory –– bright and functional.

The gold standard in replacing teeth is the dental implant. Other options like fixed bridges and dentures do not utilize the jawbone for support –– these devices instead use the surrounding teeth and mouth muscles to stay in place. The benefit of using a dental implant is that the appliance uses the jawbone for support, much like natural teeth. Dental implants effectively replace the tooth in both functionality and appearance, with the most lifelike feel and look. Implants are also the most cost-effective option when considering lifelong use of the teeth.
